A Mattress of Hope: How One Donation Changed Everything for Mityana General Hospital

In Uganda, where healthcare facilities face numerous challenges, a simple mattress can make a world of difference. At Mityana General Referral Hospital, a facility that serves close to 10 million people across five districts, the arrival of 36 new mattresses courtesy of Centenary Foundation has brought joy and relief to patients, nurses, and midwives.
Uganda’s healthcare sector is grappling with significant challenges, including a high fertility rate, limited access to healthcare facilities, and a shortage of medical supplies. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Uganda has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, with 336 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Centenary Foundation, a non-profit organization and a subsidiary of the Centenary Group, is working to address these challenges through its interventions in the health sector. The foundation’s mission is to empower communities to address poverty and sustainably transform lives. With a focus on education, health, sustainable environment management, and church mission and social activities, Centenary Foundation is committed to making a positive impact in the lives of Ugandans.
At Mityana Hospital, the impact of Centenary Foundation’s donation is evident. The new mattresses have improved the comfort and dignity of patients, particularly in the maternity ward, which was designed to accommodate 25 patients but often takes in 60 mothers. Winnie Nakabugo, a midwife and assistant nurse officer, notes that the new mattresses have made a significant difference in the labor suite, which receives 10-15 mothers daily

The nurses at Mityana Hospital are also grateful for the donation. Cissy Nakacwa, a pediatric nurse, notes that the new mattresses have improved hygiene and made it easier to care for patients. “Now we can put babies on one beds. A comfortable clean place fosters faster healing, happy patients, happy nurses.“

As Emmanuel Zirabamuzaale, the General Hospital Administrator, sums it up, “A good mattress is the first step to a healing process.” He expresses his gratitude to Centenary Foundation for the donation, noting that the hospital still needs support in other areas, including medical supplies and equipment.
Centenary Foundation’s donation to Mityana Hospital is a testament to the power of partnerships in improving healthcare outcomes. As the foundation continues to work towards its mission of empowering communities, it is clear that its impact will be felt for years to come.
