Grace – From Idle Mother To Aspiring Film Director

By    |    19 February 2026

Grace finished Senior 4 in 2019, full of hopes and dreams. But those dreams seemed to crumble when financial constraints forced her to stay at home, idle and frustrated. The situation worsened when she became a young mother, caring for a child while having no source of income and no clear path forward. “I thought life had ended, “ she remembers.“I was completely down because I couldn’t get a job or go back to school.” Her mother, though supportive, had limited finances and couldn’t afford to send her back to school. Grace spent her days at home, watching opportunities pass by while struggling with the reality of being completely dependent. The financial strain created constant anxiety, and she felt trapped in a cycle of hopelessness. When Grace’s sister told her about the SEED project opportunity at the safe space, it felt like a lifeline. She enrolled in Radio and TV presenting, along with makeup artistry. As the only student in her presenting class, Grace received intensive, personalized training that opened doors she never knew existed. The program connected her with professionals in the media industry. She met musicians, film actors, and producers while working on TV projects during her studies. These connections proved invaluable, giving her practical experience and industry insights that textbooks alone could never provide. But SEED offered more than technical training. The financial literacy sessions taught Grace about saving, budgeting, and planning for the future. “Saving was the most important thing I learned, “ she explains, “because it helps you plan for the future and stay focused on your goals. “ She also received training in mentoring, learning how to guide and support others in their journey.
Today, Grace no longer sees herself as just a presenter – she envisions herself as a future film director and producer. Her journey demonstrates that SEED’s impact extends far beyond the immediate training period. The program awakened possibilities that Grace hadn’t considered, transforming her from someone who thought life had ended into someone confidently building a career in Uganda’s growing media industry. She continues to save, plan, and work toward her dream of one day directing her own films.

Transport costs to training venues initially posed a challenge, but Grace worked with her teacher to find solutions, meeting in nearby locations when necessary. This flexibility and problem-solving approach became part of her professional toolkit. Although she didn’t receive the anticipated laptop startup kit due to the project’s premature closure, Grace didn’t let this setback define her. Instead, she leveraged the contacts and connections made during training to break into the media industry. She now works regularly with production teams, applying both her presenting and technical skills. The transformation in Grace’s self-perception has been dramatic. “I realized that I can do things I wasn’t focusing on before, “ she says with pride. She discovered unexpected talents in camera work and editing, skills that have become her passion.
